Our Ballet sessions start in our Pre-School classes from 2.5 years old.

Ballet for pleasure, Ballet for the more serious-minded. This classical style of expressive movement has something to offer for everyone. Ballet has a technique which is the foundation of all dance working on turnout, strength, grace, and poise, Ballet teaches the body proper placement. It is the most disciplined form of dance and the most respected. Every dancer with a proper ballet base is guaranteed to improve in all forms of dance.

We follow the ISTD Imperial Classical Ballet syllabus which prepares young dancers to excel both inside and outside the dance studio.

Our Hip Hop sessions start in our Stardance classes from 5 years old.

Hip Hop is the latest craze in the dance world. Have you ever seen the hottest pop band’s music video? Then you will already know what Hip Hop/ Street dance looks like. Hip Hop/Street dance takes any form of popular music – from pop to hip hop – and choreographs routines to the beats. We have seen that, only too often, the most successful pop acts have made it big by combining Hip Hop/Street dance routines with their tunes and lyrics. Hip Hop is a form of dance all students love!

We run our classes through the IDTA where students can progress through the medal test awards.






Our Jazz sessions start in our Stardance classes from 5 years old.

Freestyle/Jazz is the trendiest and most popular form of dance in the UK today. It involves runs, spins, kicks and leaps as well as many other diverse steps and movements with lots of different arm and hand actions. The music can be fast and ‘beaty’ or slow and sensuous, allowing dancers of all ages to use freedom of expression to enhance their style.

We run our classes through the IDTA where students can progress through the medal test awards.




Our Tap sessions start in our Pre-School classes from 2.5 years old.

Tap teaches students to take time and listen. It is all about creating music with different rhythms and sounds. The musical techniques taught in a tap class go on to help in all other dance classes. Students who take tap class are more  aware of the music they are dancing to, which allows them to always be in time with the music. Take tap and find out how much fun it is to create your own music!

Our classes follow the ISTD syllabus.



Our Contemporary sessions start in our Level 1 classes from 8 years old.

Contemporary dance borrows from the balletic technique. It encourages natural, spontaneous movement, and personal interpretation.
Contemporary also encourages awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, balance, fall and recovery and improvisation.

There is a focus on the connection between mind, body and breath. The improvisation is key for pupils wishing to develop their choreographic skills, using body mapping, levels shapes and dynamics.

We follow the Rambert Grades.



Modern Theatre

Modern Theatre is a rhythmic dance style that is often seen on the stage of musical productions and is known for its theatrical qualities. The style of Modern Theatre uses big leaps, travelling jumps, high kicks, turns and travelling steps which all need strength and flexibility. Modern Theatre allows our dancers to develop their performance skills as well as deepening their understanding of dance qualities.

Our classes follow the ISTD syllabus which provide a variety of styles ranging from fast and energetic to soft and lyrical.


This is an energetic class for adults who want more variety from their dance classes while increasing their aerobic fitness. If you are bored of gyms or regimented classes and want to increase your fitness while stimulating your mind, then this class is for you.

Becoming fit through the creative medium of dance is the perfect way to stimulate both mind and body, while at the same time learning new dance styles from various genres. Perfect for those who like all styles of dance and want to try out new things within the same class.

In Dancacise we move to many genres of music with routines inspired by jazz, indian, hip-hop, salsa plus other styles of dance for a full body cardio workout.

No matter what your level of fitness you will be welcomed into our friendly classes, where we work out and have fun.  Although we can’t do all of the exercises the first time, (especially when we try and get our arms and legs to do different things!) the sense of achievement when we do manage it is wonderful!  So don’t be shy, come and join us


These classes are for adults, using the ballet barre as a basis for a complete body workout, the exercises involve dynamic and static movements, isometric holds, core strengthening and stretching.

A fun workout that tones and sculpts each muscle group so you can build long lean muscle. All the exercises are performed to music.

You do not need any previous dance or general exercise experience and all classes are entirely suitable for beginners. Fitness and shape are not important.



Our Acro sessions start in Level 1 from 5 years old.

Acrobatic Dance, or Acro as it is commonly referred to by dancers and dance professionals, is the beautiful fusion of classic dance technique and the precision and athleticism of acrobatic elements. Acro technique includes balancing, limbering, tumbling and partnering, based in flexibility, contortion and strength.

It is a requirement at JSD to be taking Ballet, Modern Theatre or Jazz alongside Acro lessons, Ballet being the preferred genre as it will be the most beneficial towards their training.  As Ballet is a core subject the technique, posture and line used can be transferred across to Acro, which will aid progress. The Acro class is shown on our timetable as a 45min class, however all Acro students are required to take the Stretch, Limber and Conditioning class that runs before the session.

Our classes follow the Acrobatic arts syllabus.
