TAP/MODERN THEATRE
Tap – teaches students to take time and listen. It is all about creating music with different rhythms and sounds. The musical techniques taught in a tap class go on to help in all other dance classes. Students who take tap class are more aware of the music they are dancing to, which allows them to always be in time with the music. Take tap and find out how much fun it is to create your own music!
Modern Theatre – is a rhythmic dance style that is often seen on the stage of musical productions and is known for its theatrical qualities. Modern Theatre allows our dancers to develop their performance skills as well as deepening their understanding of dance qualities.

ACRO
Acrobatic Dance, or Acro as it is commonly referred to by dancers and dance professionals, is the beautiful fusion of classic dance technique and the precision and athleticism of acrobatic elements. Acro technique includes balancing, limbering, tumbling and partnering, based on flexibility, contortion and strength.
Acro is essentially two skills in one program, the art of dance and the skill of the acrobat. It combines many classic dance elements with a physical conditioning that allows you to undertake the complex acrobatic moves that are part of the style.
The dance element is learnt in our other classes and therefore it is a requirement at JSD for Acro students to be taking a Ballet, Modern Theatre, Jazz or Contemporary class alongside Acro.
Junior Acro – Mondays – 5:45-6:45pm (Year 3+ Children)
STREET
Street is the latest craze in the dance world and takes any form of popular music – from pop to hip hop – and choreographs routines to the beats. Street is an umbrella term, meaning that various styles come underneath it: E.G. hip hop, locking, popping, breaking, afrobeats, house, voguing, etc.
We have seen that, only too often, the most successful performers have made it big by combining Street dance routines with their music and lyrics. Street is a form of dance all students love!

CONTEMPORARY
Contemporary dance borrows from the balletic technique. It encourages natural, spontaneous movement, and personal interpretation.
Contemporary also encourages awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, balance, fall and recovery and improvisation.
There is a focus on the connection between mind, body and breath. The improvisation is key for pupils wishing to develop their choreographic skills, using body mapping, levels shapes and dynamics.
